Mumbai's suburban railway system is one of the largest and busiest in the world. With over 7.5 million passenger journeys every single day, it is the true lifeline of the city — moving office-goers, students, vendors, and tourists across the length and breadth of Mumbai and its surrounding regions, around the clock, 365 days a year.
For anyone living in or visiting Mumbai, understanding the local train network is not just convenient — it is essential. Whether you're a seasoned commuter who has been boarding the 8:32 Virar Fast since the 1990s, or a newcomer trying to figure out how to get from Bandra to CST, this guide covers everything you need to know.
Mumbai Suburban Railway operates across three primary corridors. Each serves different parts of the city and caters to distinct commuter populations:
Churchgate ↔ Dahanu Road
Covers Bandra, Andheri, Borivali, Virar & beyond.
Busiest suburban corridor in India.
CSMT ↔ Kasara / Karjat
Covers Dadar, Kurla, Thane, Dombivli, Kalyan & beyond.
CSMT ↔ Panvel / Andheri
Covers Kurla, Vashi, Belapur, and Navi Mumbai stations.
Together, these three lines span over 400 km of track and serve more than 500 stations across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The network also connects to the Trans-Harbour Line and integrates with Mumbai Metro at several interchange points.
Checking train timings has become dramatically easier with smartphone apps. With Maha Rail, you simply open the app, select your starting station, and within seconds you see every upcoming train — including its type (Local, Fast, Semi-Fast, AC Local), departure time, platform number, and real-time delay status. The live status refreshes continuously so you're always looking at the latest data, not a cached version from five minutes ago.
You can also filter trains by type: All Trains, Local only, or Non-Local — giving you precise control over which services you see. The RailRadar map takes it further by showing you exactly where every train is right now on a live map of Maharashtra.
Peak hours are 8–10 AM and 6–8 PM. If possible, travel just before or after these windows. Trains at 7:30 AM or 10:30 AM are significantly less crowded.
The coach nearest your exit staircase saves you precious minutes. Study the coach map for your regular stations once — it pays off daily.
Check Maha Rail 10 minutes before you leave. If your usual train is 15 minutes late, you can finish your breakfast instead of waiting on a crowded platform.
Use Maha Rail's Fare Calculator to know your exact ticket price before reaching the window. Saves time and avoids fumbling for change.
Mumbai local trains offer three classes of travel. Choosing the right one based on your journey distance, budget, and comfort preference can make a big difference to your daily commute:
| Class | Typical Fare | Best For | Availability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Second Class | ₹5 – ₹60 | Short to medium daily commutes | All trains |
| First Class | ₹25 – ₹300 | Comfort, less crowding during peak hours | All trains (separate coaches) |
| AC Local | ₹115 – ₹285 | Long journeys, maximum comfort | Select routes |
The Maha Rail Fare Calculator shows you the exact price for all three classes for any station-to-station journey — so you never overpay or underpay at the ticket counter.
One of Maha Rail's most powerful features is the RailRadar live map. Unlike a simple timetable, RailRadar shows you a real-time bird's-eye view of all trains currently running across Maharashtra — represented as moving arrows on an interactive map.
This is especially useful during disruptions. If a train has stopped at a signal or is stuck due to a technical issue, you'll see it on the map before any station announcement is made. You can also see how far behind a delayed train is, helping you decide whether to wait or catch the next service.
There are several train-related apps available, but Maha Rail is purpose-built for Mumbai's specific rail ecosystem. Here's what makes it different:
Is Maha Rail free? Yes — completely free, no subscription, no in-app purchases.
Does Maha Rail work offline? Yes, timetable data is available offline. Live tracking requires an internet connection.
Which Android version is required? Android 5.0 (Lollipop) or above.
Is this an official Indian Railways app? No. Maha Rail is an independent third-party app not affiliated with Indian Railways or any government body.
How accurate is the live train data? Data is sourced from public APIs and is generally accurate. Minor delays in data refresh may occur during high server load.
Scanned & verified. The APK contains no malware, adware, or spyware of any kind.
The APK is signed by the developer, ensuring it hasn't been tampered with.

Mumbai's independent, community-built local train tracker — fast, free, and built for real commuters.
Mumbai's local train network moves over 7.5 million people every day — yet getting accurate, real-time train information remained unnecessarily complicated for years. Paper timetables, crowded notice boards, unreliable announcements, and slow apps left commuters guessing.
We built Maha Rail to fix that. Our mission is to give every Mumbai commuter — regardless of their phone model, data plan, or technical ability — instant access to the information they need, completely free, with no barriers.
A commuter shouldn't need to create an account just to check if their train is on time. With Maha Rail, you open the app and it works. That's the standard we hold ourselves to.
Maha Rail is a free Android application providing:
The app is designed to be lightweight (4.8 MB), fast, and functional on 2G networks — because underground stations and crowded platforms don't always have great connectivity.
The idea started from a familiar frustration: standing on a platform at Dadar station, watching the departure board, unsure whether the Virar Fast was 3 minutes away or 13 minutes away. Existing tools were either too slow to load, too cluttered with ads, or required logins and permissions that felt excessive for something as simple as checking a train time.
We wanted something that opened instantly, showed exactly what you needed, and worked even when the network was crawling. Maha Rail is the result of that frustration turned into a product — designed by a Mumbai commuter, for Mumbai commuters.
Building apps that make daily commuting easier for Mumbaikars. Passionate about clean interfaces, fast performance, and solving real problems with simple software.
